On Wednesday July 27th, Loose wrapped a one day shoot with Columbus rap duo Booty & the Kidd. The song: “Get” follows the story of the group’s months of solitude as they focused heavily on their latest album “The Heart of it All” (expected to drop October 2016). This music video was more hectic than usual as Kidd was moving out of his apartment which we had planned to shoot in. Both felt it was vital to shoot in the apartment that they had locked themselves away in for so much time, so we had to move quickly. We wanted to expand on the themes of music and isolation by adding a surreal element to the apartment. For instance, our set designer and music director Roger Phelps, strung up vinyl albums via fishing line which was lit by a 16 inch disco ball suspended in the center of the hall. We also had drummer Bobby Brunner, playing in a blue foggy room adjacent to the action in the rest of the video.
For this music video, we had Drew Johnson, our operations manager/producer take on the role as director for the first time. Drew collaborated with our creative director/cinematographer Ori Segev in order to finish the project. I talked with both of them today about what it was like to work with each other in a setting entirely different from their usual business discussions. Both agreed it was a joy to work with each other and was incredibly productive. However, it was challenging to work through their different ideas of how the shots and the video overall should feel. In addition to Drew’s new directing style, we had Logan Floyd as our camera operator, a position normally filled by Ori. Ori said this allowed him to step back and really focus on the shot rather than exposure, focus, and changing lenses, freeing up his concentration to come up with new angles and ideas on the fly. As a cinematographer, it was challenging for him to give up direct control of the camera to someone else. But, after the first few takes he and Logan clicked and began to operate as a unit rather than two separate filmmakers.
Overall the music video was a resounding success and came out beautifully. Expect to see the final product in the next couple of months.
